Jim Crockatt
Jim Crockatt's goal and great joy is to produce sculpture, furniture and turned pieces of a very individual nature, matching the unique beauty, strength and character of the wood to the specific need and taste of the customer. The timber he uses is rich in colour, texture and grain and it is his job to bring out the qualities - both dramatic and subtle - to serve the material with integrity, the customer with honesty and both with respect. Natural woodland provides its own source of wonder. Bucklebury Common, a delightful piece of woodland is near to his workshop is both an inspiration and a resource. He has exhibited extensively in England including The Grizedale Sculpture Park in the Lake District at Liberty of Regent Street in London and more recently at Altered States Open Air Sculpture Exhibition at Shaw House, Newbury in 2019, 2020 and 2021.He has also exhibited at Arlington Arts Centre, Newbury in 2020. He is currently exhibiting his sculptures at Donnington Grove Hotel. He has been a member of the West Berkshire and Hampshire Open Studios Scheme for the last 20 years. The processes involved in his making are meticulous. He works with an extensive collection of woods including Oak, Ash, Cherry, Beech, Walnut, Mahogany and Rosewood. His interest in wood turning evolved after 16 years teaching Design & Technology in the state sector. He has now retired and has taken to wood turning which has, in turn evolved into sculpture. He is the curator of this exhibition.
